Can a collection agency refuse to give me written confirmation of a payment?

Question Details:

I am trying to pay an acocunt in full that is at an collection agency. They are refusing to give me a reciept or statement or any written notice at all that I have paid the account off completely. Is this legal?

No. You have every right to ask for written confirmation of full payment of the account. Do not send a payment until they provide you with a written confirmation or receipt. Send them a written request for this (send it return receipt) so that you can show that you are willing to pay off the account but you need written verification. You need something for your records in case the credit agencies fail to properly clear your credit record. If not, the agency could simply claim that you did not pay the account.
