Can we still be evicted in the winter with small kids in the residence?

I had 2 cars they both died within 3 days of each other causing me and my wife to lose both of our jobs. We have 4 children together ages 5, 4, 2 and 4 months old. Its now wintertime and we aren't even 1 month late on the rent and our landlord is starting the Notice to Quit. We are currently working with D.S.S and CT Works Dep. of Labor and I am receiving Unemployment and EBT cash. The total amount of assistance I receive is still $300 short of my rent.
As long as you are complying with your lease and are not in default on any terms--including, most importantly, current on rent--you can't be evicted. On the other hand, once you are late, the landlord may legally evict. Even though it's winter and you have children, the landlord is not required to let you stay there either rent free or for less than the agreed-upon rent. I know that sounds harsh, but consider this: if the landlord allows someone to stay for less than the rent, then the landlord is actually subsidizing the person out of his own pocket, and landlords are not required to do that anymore than a plumber would need to make repairs for free or a grocery store give away food.
If you know now that you are going to not be able to make the rent, you should begin looking for an alternative place to live; don't wait until the eviction happens.
