Being demote from a job.

Question Details: I've been working for a family owned business for 2 1/2 years, and they demoted me because of my job performance, limited to accusation being said about me over two years ago, but I believe it's because I don't get along with the owners best friend who is also a employee. I have never received a raise, and I have had only one review in my whole duration of employment for this company, and have been demoted a total of $4.50 and hour is this legal?

Employment and Labor Law Answers

In Wisconsin, as in most states, an employment relationship is what is known as "at will".  This means that basically the employer can hire or fire someone for any reason or no reason whatsoever, as well has increase/decrease salary/hours, promote/demote, and generally impose requirements as they see fit.  In turn, you can work for an employer, or not, your choice.

Exceptions to the above would be if there is a stated company policy covering this, or there is a union/employment agreement that governs, or this situation has arisen due to some type of discrimination/retaliation.
