Automotive repair shop's customers are not paying their bills, what can we do to collect?

Question Details:

We own and run an automotive repair shop and we have quite a few customers that are making NO effort at paying their bills; they will not even communicate with us. We mail invoices every month and phone calls, nothing is working. Some accounts are quite delinquent, the largest one is $1400. He had work done by us in July of '09 and since then has made 2 payments equaling $110. What can we do to get our money from him and the others?

Have you tried to work out payment plans with your customers? With the bad economy, some of your customers probably want to pay but cannot afford to right now. If some agree to payment plans, then you will at lease receive some money. For those who just don't want to even try to pay, your option may be to sue them in court. Perhaps they will cooperate and pay up  rather than go to court and have a judgment against them. But keep in mind that if they have no assets, you may not be able to collect on the judgments.

For the future, do not allow customers to run up such large bills. If they are not paying up, refuse to do any more work for them. It's difficult to collect when the bills pile up.
