Question: Divorce, Marriage, Alimony - California

Asked on 8/17/2009
At what age can I leave my children home alone? Can my 12 1/2 yr old daughter be left in charge of her two sister, age 5 & 9
I am resently divorced and need to be able to pick up extra shifts at work. The issue is I work the night shift. I need to know if it is legal to leave my children home alone while I go to work. My children are 12.5, 9, & 5. I understand that there is no "legal" age in the state of California but also don't want to have CPS show up on my door step.

Where is the children's other parent? First thing to consider is to allow that other parent to parent the children. CPS could show up on your doorstep -- all it would take would be a call and they would have to investigate. Have the children ever been left home alone during the day for an hour or so at a time? How would they handle such a situation? How did they handle a short time alone? Are there neighbors nearby that could keep an eye on the situation? These are a few considerations.
