If manager asks you to move out early for new tenant, are you still liable for the full month's rent?
Question Details:
I wanted to move; manager found another person to rent my place. They asked me to leave by the 11th to get the place ready for the new person moving in on the 26th. They took over the heat/electricity on that date. I was formally signed out by the on site manager. Now I am told that I owe the full month's rent. Do I owe them the rent, or by asking me to leave early and signing me out, did they terminate the contract on the 11th?
Under Wisconsin Law a tenant is liable for rent until a new tenant occupies. In this case they have someone coming on the 26th. Assuming your question relates to January take the monthly rent and divide by 31 and then multiply by 25. That is the amount of rent you owe for January. If you do move and pay that amount they would have to sue you in small claims court to get the rest and you will win that case. If you want my representatin I can help you.
