How do I find out if my wife filed for a divorce?
Question Details:
I am Canadian citizen and was married in 08/99 to a resident of ME. She moved back to ME in 06/00 and I have had no contact with her since 05/00. Am looking at getting married again and need to find out if she has filed divorce in subsequent years. i have no idea how to find that out. As well nothing was ever filed with County or State agencies in ME, further no paperwork was ever filed in Canada. Any advice on where to even start or what direction to fun in, would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the information on the state of Maine's website for locating divorce records: http://www.maine.gov/portal/facts_history/vital_records.html. If you find no record, you may need to double-check all the divorce courts in the Portland area. But you have no way of knowing if she moved and filed for divorce in another county or state. Also, if she did not know your location and filed for divorce, how could she serve you with divorce papers? I would consult with a family law attorney either in your area in Canada or in Maine. The attorney can probably do a complete record search and then advise you as to your next legal option. You may have to do a record search in all 50 states assuming she may have moved several times in 10 years. If you find no record of a divorce, you can file for divorce but you still need to serve her with papers. So essentially, you need to locate your wife.
