After purchasing a used vehicle from a dealership, how much time do you have if you want to return it?
Question Details:
Or can you pick out a different one?
For vehicles purchased in IL, consumers have 3 days from date of purchase to rescind/cancel contract and return vehicle and get your money back. It should be stated on your contract that you have 3 days or 72 hours. You may be entitled to additional relief for a lemon vehicle, fraud, misrepresentation etc. Any questions, contact me for a free consult.
In IL there is no 3 day right to cancel on used vehicle purchases; only new vehicle purchases carry this right. However, you could ask the dealer what their cooling off period is and/or get it in writing before buying the vehicle. You could negotiate a 3 day right to cancel with the dealer; be sure to get it in writing.
Sales are generally final. If the dealership gives customers a period to change their mind, return, or exchange a vehicle, that is one thing--and if they do, you'll generally find that in the contract or other documents of sale and/or prominently in their advertising and marketing material. However, that's it--unless the dealership provided this option, a buyer is stuck with the car they purchased. There is no general right to return or exchange a purchase, even a big-ticket one like a car.
