A water association is billing me for a tenants water usage. Is this leagal? How can I fight them? They are threatening to turn off the water.

Question Details: I own a home that my brother, girlfriend and 6 kids were staying in. They vacated the property owing 2 months and utilities on the home. The electric company is going after them. The water association is billing me when the water was in their name. I have been told that they have not been current since May and have incurred late fees and insufficient fund fees. They association is threatening to turn my water off when I have not been late. I only recieved a bill in todays mail.

You don't have a lot of leverage here.  Without water service, the home is uninhabitable and you can't rent it; if that lasts for any length of time, the health department might require you to board the place up, which is not a good situation.

I can't imagine that even six months' worth of water bills adds up to enough to justify thousands of dollars in legal fees, to fight them in court, especially since I certainly can't guarantee you'd win.
