A coconut fell and broke my windshield while parked in the driveway of our rental house.

I'm sorry, but unless you can show (in some way that I would have to see to understand) that the coconut falling was caused by your landlord's carelessness (or his deliberate act), there's no legal reason why he should be liable. Even if there were carelessness, somehow, you'd have to contend with the question of whether it was careless of you to park under a coconut palm in the first place.
The law recognizes the fact that sometimes, an accident is just an accident, not anybody's fault, and usually that means whoever's property got damaged has to deal with it.
