If someone caught shoplifting pays the court fine do they also have to pay a fine to the store where the offense occurred?

Question Details:

Daughter was caught shoplifting at Wal-Mart with another girl. Went to court, pleaded guilty and were given a year probation, fine and community service; told it would not be on her record if shey didn't violate probabtion. Now Wal-Mart has sent a letter with a $150 fine. I've been told she should ignore it since she's been tried. What do we do?.

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  Walmart is permitted to sek restitution for the money/property value taken.  if the state did not impose any terms of probation where she is required to repay walmart, then walmart may sue her in civil court for conversion and obtain compensation.  I suggest working out a deal with walmart where your daughter pay it back in installments if she cannot afford the lump sum payment.
